Cleaned Up BBQ Sauce

Making your own BBQ sauce is easier than you think. And tastes better than anything you can buy. You can monitor the sugar level and adjust flavour to your family preferences. Try it!

In my search for sugar-free options, I've come across various BBQ sauce recipes. I've come to the conclusion that a little sugar goes a long way. The total sugar count for this recipe is only 21g (just over a teaspoon) per serving. You can easily reduce this by omitting the molasses, but you will lose a bit of iron and the sticky, thick texture of the sauce.

It's great for finishing ribs and pork, and also works for pulled pork and chicken during the winter - just pour it into the insta-pot or slow cooker and away we go!

  • 1/2 cup Tomato Paste

  • 1 cup Water

  • 1/3 cup Maple Syrup

  • 2 tbsps Fancy Molasses

  • 3 tbsps Apple Cider Vinegar

  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp Cumin

  • 2 tsps Paprika

  • 1 tsp Onion Powder

  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder

  • 1 tsp Black Pepper

  • 1 tsp Sea Salt

  • 1/2 tsp Ground Mustard

  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper

  1. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, stir together all ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  2. Transfer to a jar and let cool. Enjoy!
